Dry January didn’t seem to be a consideration for criminals last month with alcohol being the most stolen item, according to the latest stats released by Retailers Against Crime. Confectionary, ink cartridges, household goods and cosmetics also made it into the Top 10 most wanted items.

Using data submitted by its members, the RCA figures show that incidents reported across the UK have increased, with alcohol, groceries and clothing remaining the most targeted items. Ink cartridges, razors and “change ringing” scam incidents have all doubled.

Overall, 769 incidents were reported in January with 472 unknown suspects circulated among members. A further 47 (10 per cent) were identified suspects.
