Generous members of the public wanting to help refugees fleeing the Ukraine are being warned about new scams involving pleas for donations linked to cryptocurrencies.
Reports have been made that people are being targeted in phishing emails and forum posts to donate via cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. The emails also ask for personal and financial details which could be used for future fraud activity.
The emails give fake addresses and falsely claim they are connected to the Ukrainian government. Any donations made do not make it further than the fraudsters own crypto wallet and bank account.
Anyone wishing to check out a charity should go to the Charity Commission, which registers all charities, and search the register at gov.uk/find-charity-information.
