Airport security staff who planned to take industrial action over pay have suspended the threat – for now.

Workers at security were set to walk out for three days after 93% of the GMB union voted in favour of a strike.

Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) have tabled “a number of commitments to improve pay” said GMB spokesman, Joe Wheatley.

Mr Wheatley said the offer would now be put to its members working in security at LBA.

A spokesman for LBA said: “We are pleased to have worked closely and constructively with GMB to make progress towards an agreement.”

Management said the suspension of strike action was “a positive step towards a conclusive agreement with the union and our staff”.

Before the strike action was suspended GMB official Rachel Dix said the ballot result was “a powerful result”

She added:”With a very high response rate, most of the votes were cast over the first two days of the ballot such was the strength of feeling and motivation of our members to ensure that they are finally heard.

“All they are asking for is a wage which will afford them a decent standard of living.

“Our members have been incredibly patient but the discretionary performance related bonuses that have been offered are not trusted, too late in the day and are no substitute for an hourly pay increase.

“They are not prepared to wait any longer for the respect and renumeration they deserve from their employer, but they are genuinely open to constructive negotiation that will pave the way to a satisfactory resolution.”
