England’s World Cup heroes have stepped up domestic security arrangements after the armed burglary at the home of winger Raheem Sterling.

The squad members are understood to have increased protection after the break-in amid fears of organised crime gangs targeting footballers.

Sterling’s Surrey home was robbed while the occupants were out and only discovered theft of valuables, including jewellery and watches, later.

The “shaken” player dropped out of the squad for the victory over Senegal in Qatar but team mates have ordered an immediate review of security at their homes.

According to one report, players’ agents were told to put security teams on 24-hour patrols at home, intercept attempted deliveries and monitor any unusual or suspicious activity.

The danger of robbery, burlgary and kidnapping is ever-present with the modern, high-earning stars of the English top flight.

Some spend over £100,000 a year to try to keep their properties and families safe, according to one estimate.

Surrey Police said: “We are currently investigating a report of a burglary at an address in Oxshott, Leatherhead.

“Police were contacted just before 9pm on Saturday December 3rd after the occupants of the property came home and discovered a number of items including jewellery and watches had been stolen.

“Inquiries to establish the circumstances are under way and the investigation is ongoing. No threat of violence was involved as the items were discovered stolen retrospectively.”
