Custom Consoles SteelBase desk and MediaWall monitor display support system installed to supervise production of wood-based commodities mill in Cumbria.

Holmen Iggesund, one of Europe’s longest established providers of forestry-related products and services, has chosen a Custom Consoles SteelBase desk and MediaWall monitor display support system for integration into a newly completed process control suite at its Workington mill facility in Cumbria. The suite is used to supervise production of wood-based commodities such as paperboard.

Custom Consoles: The solution

“We needed a robustly built wing-shaped desk plus a video display mount that would allow a single operator, or a team of two, to view a large production area,” said Holmen technician Robert McCracken. “We outlined our requirement to Custom Consoles who responded with a design using modules from their SteelBase and MediaWall series. Custom Consoles were also able to provide chairs plus a storage unit. The proposals looked good, so we gave the go-ahead and are very pleased with the results, not least the attention to detail which is evident throughout the structures.”

“The desk has a 4.2 metre wide by 1.8 metre front-to-back configuration formed from six bays,” detailed Custom Consoles Sales Manager, Gary Fuller. “Each bay incorporates storage space for a personal computer and up to 6U of 19-inch rack-mounting equipment for applications such as communication.

“Access to any installed PCs is via lockable hinged doors at front and rear. Each door is vented to allow convection cooling. Horizontal and vertical ducts are incorporated throughout the desk to allow easy installation and maintenance of power and signal cables. Support panels are fitted at the left and right sides of the desk.

“The worktop has a Marmoleum surface in blue with black PVC edging. Both side panels are finished in grey contrasting with the jet-black surface of the steel frames. A single monitor is mounted at the rear left of the desk, but others can be added if required at any future time. A bespoke ergonomically designed HMI equipment housing was also supplied.”

A structured desking system offering a hard wearing and ergonomic solution for control room consoles, SteelBase takes its name from the high-strength steel base frames which form its structural core. Desks and related fittings such as equipment pods and side units can be specified and combined from a range of standard powder-coated steel base frames. Cable management is provided throughout the console with access to equipment through hinged removable doors at front and rear and via removable worktop access panels. Predrilled monitor arm mounting points are positioned at the rear upper edge of each bay.

SteelBase desktops are available in a choice of 120 cm (standard) or 100 cm (SteelBase Lite) front-to-back sizes with a choice of hard-wearing Marmoleum or laminate work surfaces. All elements of SteelBase are guaranteed against component failure for five years of normal use. SteelBase furniture is designed to meet or exceed the requirements of ISO9241-5, EN527-1, 2 and 3 and BS EN ISO11064.

A short distance forward of the desk is a 2.65 metre wide single-span MediaWall supporting three 40 inch flat-screen monitor displays positioned side by side. Above these is a row of three 42 inch displays. Total height of the MediaWall is 2.4 metres.

One of the most successful product ranges in the Custom Consoles portfolio, MediaWall is a video and audio monitor support frame system based on horizontal beams and T-slot mounts, fully adjustable to ensure optimal sight lines. Individual or multiple frames can be used in self-supporting mode or coupled directly to the studio wall. Video displays can be positioned so that the edges meet exactly to form a continuous horizontal display limited only by the screen bezel. Monitor signal and power cables are fully concealed and can enter or leave the structure at any desired point.
