Behind the scenes at the Cyber Resilience Centre for Wales (WCRC) Part 3

Over the last few weeks, we’ve spent a little time with WCRC Director, Paul Peters and WCRC Head of Cyber and Innovation, Paul Hall to understand what their roles consist of at the centre, gaining insights into how they deliver their work.

Now it’s the turn of the centre’s Client Relations Advisor, Morgan Bromhamm. Here he tells us what his role consists of and how he balances this with his university studies.

Are you finding the work you’re doing helpful with your university studies?

I am currently studying business and management and the experience of working with the WCRC has given me an opportunity to put my academic studies into a real-life work situation. Having gained work experience with the centre it has allowed me to understand the importance of certain aspects of my course which I know are valuable in the workplace.

My role within the WCRC has improved my communication skills and I have gained a lot of confidence in engaging and presenting to new audiences. This in turn has helped me with presenting to my university lecturers and fellow students which was one aspect I previously struggled with.

By gaining practical experience within a business environment, I feel that on completion of my studies I will be in a better position to gain full time employment compared to my fellow pupils.

How many days/hours per week do you work at the WCRC?

Both Paul Peters and Paul Hall have been excellent and have made it clear to me that my main focus is always my university studies and ensuring that I prioritise completing assignments over working with the WCRC. I am an organised person and therefore have ensured that I complete my studies as well as support the WCRC in my role as Client Relations Advisor. On average I am currently working 6hrs a week.

How many businesses do you engage with weekly?

Generally, on a weekly basis I engage with approximately 30 businesses a week.

Which members do you contact on a weekly basis?

I aim to contact new members within seven days of them joining the WCRC. This is to ensure that they have the welcome pack, and they are set up to receive the monthly newsletters. I will discuss their current cyber security and ascertain if they need any immediate support and if they do, I will pass on the details for Paul Hall to contact them and provide next-step suggestions. I also do regular check-ins with existing members to see if they need any further support but also to gather any feedback regarding the services, we have provided to them.

What are the most common issues discussed?

This varies depending on the cyber security knowledge a member has. Some are very new to utilising technology in the workplace and lack experience around cyber security and cybercrime. When speaking to these members a lot of the time we speak about the most common threats they will be targeted with, and I try and reinforce the key principles of cyber security. These conversations give the member reassurance of what to look out for and what they can do to protect themselves from becoming a victim.
