PSSA internal auditor highlights evolution of membership audits in drive for higher standards.

Perimeter Security Suppliers Association (PSSA) is demonstrating its commitment to upholding high industry standards through the progressive evolution of its membership audits. Maggie Horritt, the internal auditor of the PSSA, is at the helm of this crucial change, leveraging her extensive background in the security sector to guide this transformative initiative.

Maggie Horritt, a well respected mechanical design engineer with a long history in Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) product design, began her journey in this field in 2005 at Broughton Controls. Her subsequent roles at Geoquip and Hesco further solidified her as a key figure in the development of various successful security products. Latterly she held the position of technical writer at Heald and now, as the PSSA’s internal auditor, Maggie plays a crucial role in ensuring that PSSA members adhere to the highest standards of quality and reliability.

The restructured auditing system, initiated in early 2021, represents a significant step forward for the PSSA. This system is not merely a regulatory measure but a robust framework aimed at positioning the association’s members as representatives of trust, accuracy, and accountability in the security industry. The audit’s emphasis on regulatory compliance reduces legal risks and enhances public safety. Introduction of point-based assessment

This auditing process has matured significantly over the past two years, transitioning from a basic operational review to a sophisticated, measurable system. This system aligns closely with the PSSA Code of Conduct and is set to be fully implemented shortly. One of its most innovative aspects is the introduction of a point-based assessment for each member’s website audit. This method offers a transparent and tailored evaluation, focusing on the authenticity and clarity of product information. The confidentiality of the audits ensures fairness and individualised scrutiny.

The scoring system not only provides a clear metric of performance but also identifies potential areas for improvement. Members are expected to act on these insights within set deadlines, with the risk of facing the PSSA membership committee for non-compliance, which could lead to exclusion from the association.

In addition the PSSA has introduced The Hostile Vehicle Mitigation Installers Scheme (HVMIS). This initiative is designed to improve standards in the installation and maintenance of Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) systems.

This comprehensive scheme outlines a systematic process that includes stages from initial tendering to final installation, emphasising not only technical proficiency but also compliance with regulatory standards. It involves rigorous third-party verification and mandatory maintenance, ensuring that each installation aligns with physical site constraints, budgetary considerations, and most importantly, safety requirements.

These initiatives, including the confidential and customised audits and improving standards in the installation and maintenance of HVM products, are a testament to the PSSA’s determination to eradicate misleading representations in product testing and information.
