According to a new report from Veeam Data Protection Trends, cyber-attacks are the number one cause of business outages across organisations, despite IT leaders spending more on methods to prevent it.  

It also says that companies are feeling even less protected and more concerned about its their ability to recover and restore mission-critical data.  

Why cyber-attacks are so harmful for business  

The report found that, 76% of organisations were attacked at least once in the last year, making ransomware more or less inevitable at some point.  

While this number is down from 85% in 2023, the data revealed that once companies are attacked for the first time, 26% of them went on to be attacked four times in a year.  

Not only this, but only 32% of organisations believe they can recover from a small attack, crisis or outage within a week.  

Despite most organisations considering cyber resiliency a foundational aspect of its broader business continuity or disaster recovery (BC/DR) strategy, BC/DR preparedness is not yet passing most SLA expectations. 

How the problem has become so big  

The report also states that digital transformation is being hampered by cyber-attacks. 

The survey ranked protecting against cyber threats and addressing environmental, social and governmental goals as the biggest inhibitors to IT modernisation and digital transformation initiatives.
