James Kent, CEO and Founder of BlackRainbow, discusses his motivation behind establishing the company and his goals for 2025.

Can you tell me about your journey in the security industry?  

My journey in the security industry has been a dynamic and fulfilling one.

I began my professional life as an engineer, but soon followed my passion into law enforcement as a detective.

A major turning point was in 1999, when I was tasked with establishing a high-tech crime unit for digital forensics and cybersecurity—a challenging but transformative experience.  

This expertise led me to find a consulting and training company specialising in digital forensics, incident response and cybersecurity, catering to law enforcement and government agencies. 

After a brief retirement, I Co-Founded BlackRainbow, motivated by a desire to simplify investigations and improve efficiency for the security and investigations community.  

What was your motivation behind Co-Founding BlackRainbow?  

Having spent years in law enforcement and the private sector, I saw first-hand the inefficiencies and challenges in managing investigations.

BlackRainbow was created to address these pain points by building software that simplifies complex investigations, enhances efficiency and ensures integrity throughout the process.  

Our goal with BlackRainbow and our flagship product, NIMBUS, was to create a tool that transforms investigation management for law enforcement, government and corporate sectors, making a tangible difference in how cases are handled.  

How does Black Rainbow’s services benefit the security industry?  

BlackRainbow’s services bring transformative benefits to the security industry.

NIMBUS centralises investigation management, reducing reliance on spreadsheets, siloed systems, or unsupported open-source tools.

It enables organisations to streamline the entire investigation lifecycle, from evidence collection to analytics, reporting and compliance with quality standards. 

By integrating data, automating workflows and enhancing decision-making, NIMBUS helps investigators save time, maintain integrity and achieve better outcomes.   

What are the company’s main goals for 2025? 

The next phase for BlackRainbow is focused on further growth and resilience to meet the evolving demands of the market.

As a team, BlackRainbow genuinely strives to make a meaningful difference in how professionals manage their daily work.

We have recently expanded the NIMBUS Ecosystem with the launch of two new products:
