Wired or wireless door entry systems?

In the fast-evolving world of security systems, property managers face a critical choice: wired or wireless door entry systems?

This decision has far-reaching implications for security, cost and long-term reliability.

While wireless systems may seem like the modern choice, a wired door entry system with remote access control often delivers the best results – offering unmatched reliability, low maintenance and minimal management.

The growing trend of wireless systems

Wireless door entry systems have gained significant attention, driven by their perceived convenience and simplicity.

For property managers, the allure of wireless solutions lies in the ability to avoid the need for physical cabling, and the promise of remote management from anywhere.

While wireless systems have their advantages —such as in listed buildings where running cables may not be an option, or in situations where a temporary solution is required—they are not always the best choice, especially when cable infrastructure is already in place.

Our advice – before committing to a wireless system, several important factors should be considered.

Future changes in infrastructure

A wireless entry panel may be set up to work seamlessly initially, but changes to the surrounding infrastructure can impact the system’s performance.

Variations such as new buildings, construction, or changes in the environment and weather can weaken the wireless signal, leading to potential connectivity issues.

Changes in network provider

As wireless door entry systems rely on mobile networks for functionality, changes in network ownership, infrastructure, or coverage could affect their reliability.

If the system relies on a single network, any disruption or change in service could cause problems.

To mitigate this risk, property managers should consider systems that utilise multi-network SIM cards and avoid long term contracts, which can be difficult and costly to exit if issues arise with the service.

Reliability

Signal strength is crucial for ensuring the system works correctly.

Poor signal can prevent the system from connecting, particularly if the user’s smart device lacks the necessary signal strength to receive calls from the entry panel.

This can be especially problematic as users will inevitably move from place to place where coverage will fluctuate leading to disruptions and frustration.

Wireless systems may not be the most suitable choice for properties with high resident turnover.

Each time a resident move in or out, both the property management company and the resident must go through several administrative processes to ensure the system is reconfigured and ready to use again.

Why choose a wired door entry system?

One of the primary advantages of using a wired system is the ability to reuse existing cabling.

With wired options available that only require two cores for audio and video, even when existing cable is damaged, the system can still work efficiently.

With cabling already in place, there is no need for extensive work, meaning the upgrade can be completed quickly and with minimal disturbance to residents.

Once installed, wired systems require no modification when residents change as the infrastructure remains.

This reduces the need for ongoing management and makes transitions seamless for both property managers and residents.

The fixed nature of wired systems means that maintenance is minimal and easy to manage.

Repairs generally involve a loose connection with no need for new parts, or a change of a single physical component.

Wired systems are inherently reliable because they provide a direct, physical connection.

The fixed nature of the system ensures a stable and uninterrupted service for residents.

With wired systems designed to last for decades, manufacturers often continue to support these systems long after installation.

For example, many systems installed over 30 years ago still work efficiently today, which reflects their long-term durability and support.

Wired systems can be expanded to meet the needs of the managing agent or resident by adding more devices, such as additional internal monitors and calls to smart phones.

Wired systems seamlessly integrate remote access control and can be linked to smart home technologies via smart relays.

Remote access control: A seamless solution

When paired with remote access control, a wired door entry system offers a highly effective and versatile solution.

Remote access control systems are cloud-based, allowing property managers to manage multiple sites from a single, user-friendly platform that they can access from anywhere.

With the manager in control of adding and deactivating fobs, setting access limitations and issuing temporary passes to contractors, the process is simplified and provides significant advantages in tackling issues such as cuckooing, subletting and other anti-social behaviours.

Importantly, remote access control systems often come with anti-clone technology, which ensures that the fobs used are secure and cannot be easily duplicated.

This provides an additional layer of security against unauthorised access.

Our recommended remote access control systems do not require monthly payments or additional fees, as they either come free of charge or with an inclusive data package, making it a more cost-effective solution for ongoing management.

Our advice

The best solution combines the reliability of wired systems with the flexibility of smart device integration and remote managed access control.

Together, these systems deliver a comprehensive solution that protects properties, simplifies management, and ensures residents feel safe in their homes.
