Toby Roberts-Davies, Product and Marketing Manager at First Fence, shares his insights, motivations and plans for advancing the high-security fencing sector.
My journey into the security sector began as a Business Development Manager for Gatemaster Locks, a leading UK-based manufacturer of gate hardware.
My focus there was in developing solutions for the mass market, as well as leading specialist security projects tailored to the needs of fence and gate manufacturers.
During my time working alongside some of the UK’s top high-security gate manufacturers, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the Loss Prevention Certification Board’s (LPCB) LPS 1175 standards.
This experience helped me appreciate how even the smallest details in hinge, drop bolts and lock design can significantly impact a site’s security vulnerabilities.
First Fence is a market leader in fence and gate manufacturing, offering a comprehensive range of in-house services.
These include site surveys, bespoke calculations, standard and bespoke manufacturing, installation and commissioning of high-security fencing systems.
Our expertise lies in the “security triangle”—detect, response, and delay.
Our advisors are trained to assess vulnerabilities in site security and recommend the most effective solutions.
Additionally, our in-house engineering team can produce drawings and concepts, as well as submit designs for approval by relevant Security Standard Schemes, within 24 hours of an enquiry.
This enables us to provide the industry’s fastest turnaround from enquiry to delivery without compromising security standards.
We also offer Perimeter Intruder Detection Systems (PIDS) and anti-climb and anti-burrowing accessories to meet diverse site security requirements.
First Fence has built a reputation for being the fastest supplier of standard fencing products in the market.
With eight locations and 90 vehicles, including a central distribution centre, we excel at responding rapidly to customer needs.
When we entered the high-security market, we identified a gap: most competitors offered lead times of four weeks or more for LPS 1175-certified gates and fences.
However, we recognised that critical infrastructure sites and logistics depots often require urgent replacements due to damage or new security demands.
To address this, we maintain high stock levels of certified high-security fencing, ensuring we can deliver quickly without sacrificing quality or compliance.
We have established robust processes under our LPCB Factory Production Control (FPC) audit, which builds on the foundations of ISO 9001.
With these systems in place, we are well-positioned to accelerate product development.
In 2025, we are committed to responding to market trends, addressing pain points with existing systems and introducing innovative, tested, and approved solutions.
A key focus will be on engaging with installers.
We’ve recognised that poorly installed perimeter fencing can be as ineffective as having no fence at all.
Our strategy this year will centre on supporting installers to ensure combined security effectiveness and robust perimeter protection.
