Midlothian Council has announced a CCTV upgrade, improving Police Scotland’s ability to investigate alleged offences, offering community safety, according to a new report by the council.
The programme of improvements has been underway since late 2023 and already aided the police in Midlothian to solve a variety of serious crimes, track stolen vehicles and monitor antisocial behaviour.
Whilst deterring criminal activity and aiding in the identification of offenders, the new CCTV cameras in Bonnyrigg, Penicuik, Dalkeith, Loanhead, Danderhall and Mayfield have enabled officers to monitor and respond to incidents more effectively.
Sheriffhall Park and Ride has also received upgrades, including the addition of speed bumps, enhanced LED lighting and nine new functional CCTV units.
Plans include the purchase of six mobile CCTV units and a mast trailer for flexible use, which can be moved to different locations as required.
The Midlothian Council approved a major upgrade in December 2021, committing to the investment of £471,860 in new multi-sensor cameras and wireless CCTV units, with an additional £97,622 added to the annual budget for 2022/23.
A second phase to expand the CCTV network to other areas in Midlothian is currently under consideration in consultation with Police Scotland.
Dianne Alexander, Cabinet Member for Community Facilities – Councillor said: “The council’s investment in modern CCTV technology is a proactive step towards creating a safer environment for all residents.”
Alexander continued: “As we’re already seeing, these upgrades are enhancing public safety, discouraging anti-social behaviour and making it easier for the police to investigate crime.”
“The upgrade to the digital infrastructure involved is also helping both the council and Police Scotland use resources more efficiently, which is a fantastic outcome for everybody in Midlothian,” finalised Alexander.
