A Legacy of Beauty and Community

In the small village of Turtle Lake, Wisconsin, there is a woman whose presence has shaped the community for over five decades. Ruth Morton, a long-time resident and owner of Ruth’s Styling Nook, has become a pillar of the town, known not just for her work in beauty but for her unwavering commitment to those around her.

Morton began her journey in the world of hair at an early age. “I started doing my dad’s hair when I was three,” she recalls with a smile. “How did I know then what I was going to do later?” Her passion for haircuts and styling grew over time, leading her to open her own salon. Today, her shop is filled with products, memories, and the stories of countless clients who have come through its doors.

The community has shown immense appreciation for her dedication. On a recent Sunday afternoon, the red carpet outside her shop was lined with people expressing gratitude and cheers for her contributions. “A lot of people are not happy with their own hair,” Morton says. “I’ve always believed that confidence starts with how you look.”

Her work goes beyond just cutting hair. She has visited nursing homes, helping residents feel more confident and cared for. “Many ladies had cancer and needed wigs,” she explains. “They would bring them in and say they like the color, but not the style. I would try to change it.” She also offers her services at funeral homes, a role that many find difficult to take on.

Morton has built lasting relationships with her clients. Some have been coming to her for years, and she often speaks about the loyalty she has seen. One such client is Tom Messicci, who first came to her when he was in high school. “She was new in town,” he says. “I got a haircut, and I was going to college at Stout. My hairstyle ended up on the cover of their annual publication. They liked it.”

Despite turning 74, Morton shows no signs of slowing down. “All my ladies ask me if I’m retiring,” she says. “I’m not retiring. I will be in the salon for quite a long time.” Her dedication to her craft and her clients is evident in every visit.

There is also beauty in passing the torch. Morton has trained young stylists, including Addie Orf, who now works at Ruth’s Styling Nook. “It would be exciting to carry on the tradition,” Orf says. “Ruth has put a good name for herself in the area, and I want to continue that legacy.”

Family plays a significant role in Morton’s life as well. Her children, Briana and Ross, have celebrated her achievements and the impact she has made on the community. “I have much of my mom here,” she says, reflecting on the support and love from her family.

Morton’s journey into the beauty industry was not planned. She originally considered becoming a teacher but found her true calling in hair. She attended beauty school in Eau Claire and chose to stay in small towns, where she feels most at home.

Her story is one of perseverance, dedication, and the power of community. From her early days cutting hair to her current status as a respected figure in Turtle Lake, Ruth Morton continues to inspire those around her. Her work not only enhances the appearance of her clients but also strengthens the bonds within the community.
