The Return of the Nissan Micra

The Nissan Micra was once a popular choice among learner drivers in the UK, known for its ease of use, compact size, and low running costs. However, over time, it lost its appeal and became a less memorable option compared to rivals like the Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo. In 2022, Nissan decided to discontinue the Micra, with no direct replacement in sight.

But as the automotive industry shifts toward electrification, Nissan has given the Micra a second chance. This sixth-generation model is entirely electric, offering a fresh start in the competitive electric vehicle market. It aims to compete with models like the Citroen e-C3 and Renault 5. Let’s take a closer look at what this new Micra has to offer.

A Shared Foundation

While the new Micra may not be entirely new, it benefits from a collaboration with its parent company, Renault. The car is built on the same AmpR Small platform as the Renault 5, which is a solid foundation. The interior layout, drivetrains, and mechanical components are also shared with the R5.

However, the Micra has been designed to stand out from its Renault counterpart. The exterior features unique styling elements, such as a taller horizontal bonnet and a bold body line called the ‘Gelato Scoop.’ The cabin also uses different materials and fabrics to give it a more mature and practical feel.

Performance and Range

The Micra offers two battery options, both of which are also found in the Renault 5. Our test vehicle came equipped with the larger 52kWh battery, paired with an electric motor that produces 147bhp and 245Nm of torque. This allows the car to accelerate from 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 93mph. Nissan claims the 52kWh variant can travel up to 260 miles on a single charge.

For those looking for a more budget-friendly option, there’s also a 40kWh battery that provides a range of 198 miles. Both variants support 100kW DC rapid charging, which can take the battery from 15% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

Driving Experience

The Micra drives very similarly to the Renault 5, which isn’t a bad thing. It’s well-suited for city driving thanks to its light steering, tight turning circle, and compact dimensions. On open roads, the accurate steering and minimal body lean make it feel more grown-up, while the smooth acceleration and comfortable ride contribute to a confident driving experience.

However, there are a few drawbacks. The front tires can lose traction in wet conditions, and wind noise becomes noticeable at higher speeds on the motorway.

Design and Style

The Micra shares many design elements with the Renault 5, but it has its own distinct identity. The front end features a taller bonnet and redesigned headlights inspired by the third-generation Micra (from 2002 to 2010). The rear includes brand-specific lettering and gloss black trim, giving it a more refined appearance.

The side profile retains the sporty stance of the R5, with hidden rear door handles and the ‘Gelato Scoop’ body line. All models come with 18-inch wheels, and our test vehicle had a two-tone paint scheme that added a touch of flair.

Interior and Features

The interior is based on the Renault 5’s layout, featuring two 10.1-inch screens angled toward the driver. There are physical climate control buttons and a square-shaped steering wheel. However, the steering column has an excessive number of stalks, making the area feel cluttered.

The materials used on the dashboard and door cards are somewhat cheap, and storage space is average. Door bins are narrow, and the glove compartment is small. That said, the back seat offers enough head and legroom for adults, though the high floor might cause discomfort on long trips.

The boot space is impressive, with 326 litres of cargo capacity or 1,106 litres when the rear seats are folded down. This is more than the Citroen e-C3 and matches the Renault 5.

Equipment and Pricing

In the UK, the Micra is available in three trim levels: Engage, Tekna, and Evolve. The entry-level Engage comes with the 40kWh battery and starts at £22,995. It includes features like climate control, a heat pump, four speakers, a digital instrument cluster, and a 10.1-inch infotainment system.

Our test vehicle was the flagship Evolve model, priced at £29,865. It includes premium features such as a Harmon Kardon sound system, heated front seats and steering wheel, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a two-tone paint scheme. With the government’s Electric Vehicle Grant, prices start at £21,495 for the base model and go up to £28,365 for the Evolve.

Final Thoughts

Nissan could have created a completely new car for the sixth-generation Micra, but instead, it chose to build on an existing platform and add its own touches. While it doesn’t feel revolutionary, the overall package is strong in terms of design, performance, and pricing.

Whether you prefer the Micra over the Renault 5 comes down to personal taste. The R5 has a more distinctive design, but the Micra is still a compelling option for loyal Nissan customers who appreciate its style and features.
