Republican state schools Superintendent Ryan Walters has announced his resignation from his elected position, signaling a shift in his career as he prepares to take on a new role as the chief executive officer of an organization that has been closely tied to his political agenda. Walters made the announcement during an appearance on Fox News at Night, where he spoke with host Trace Gallagher about his upcoming leadership of the Teacher Freedom Alliance.

The Teacher Freedom Alliance is described as an alternative to traditional teacher unions and is part of the Freedom Foundation, a far-right anti-labor union think tank. This move aligns with Walters’ long-standing opposition to teachers’ unions, which he has previously compared to terrorist organizations. He has actively promoted the alliance through social media and official communications, emphasizing its mission to challenge the influence of teacher unions in education.

Walters stated during the interview that the alliance aims to “destroy the teachers’ unions” and combat what he perceives as their corrupting influence on schools. He expressed confidence in the organization’s potential to build a significant grassroots movement to counter union power and restore control over public education.

Despite his announcement, Walters did not provide specific details regarding when he plans to submit his resignation. However, he had teased the news earlier in the day, posting on X that he would share “big news.” His message was laced with a sense of triumph, as he claimed it was a “liberal’s worst nightmare.”

Following the announcement, the Teacher Freedom Alliance confirmed Walters’ appointment, describing it as a “bold new era of leadership” for the group. The organization currently claims to have 2,617 teacher members across the country.

Walters’ decision to resign has sparked immediate reactions from political opponents. Attorney General Gentner Drummond, one of his key rivals, quickly criticized the move, stating that it is time for a superintendent who will focus on quality instruction. Oklahoma Democrats also responded swiftly, with some expressing relief over his departure.

Senate Minority Leader Julia Kirt commented that Walters has consistently prioritized personal ambitions over the needs of students and teachers. She criticized the Republican Party for failing to hold him accountable during his tenure.

To officially resign, Walters must submit a notice to Governor Kevin Stitt. The Oklahoma State Board of Education, which Walters chairs, is scheduled to meet on Thursday. Once he resigns, the governor will appoint a new superintendent to serve out the remainder of his term, which ends in January 2027.

While no official appointments have been made yet, several potential candidates are being discussed, including state senators Adam Pugh and Shane Jett, as well as former state Rep. Mark McBride. All are Republicans, and some have a history of focusing on educational issues.

Walters’ exit from the state superintendent role marks a significant shift in Oklahoma’s education landscape. His tenure has been marked by controversial policies, including mandates to teach from the Bible and honor Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative figure. His efforts to require schools to report student immigration statuses faced backlash and ultimately led to a restructuring of the State Board of Education, limiting his influence.
