Update: Smart contacted us and explained that it does not have any intentions of creating a direct follow-up to the original ForFour, and we have updated this article accordingly.
Smart recently confirmed that a new generation ForTwois being developed and is set to be released in late 2026 with the #2 designation. What surprised many was a report regarding a more flexible four-door model, the #4, which essentially revives the essence of the now-discontinued ForFour. However, shortly after the news emerged, Smart clarified the situation.
Smart’s Global PR Director Jack Bailey told bootstrap4u.com: “I’m worried the information in theAutocar The report was wrong. Although we value the interest in smart and our products, there are currently no plans to create a successor for the forfour or a #4.” He also mentioned, “the positive feedback and excitement from our fans and the public has been very encouraging. We are looking forward to sharing more information about the #2 soon.”
More: Smart Could Bring Back Its Most Enjoyable Model
The initial assertion originated fromAutocar, following a discussion with Smart Europe CEO Dirk Adelmann during theMunich Motor Show. Adelmann was said to be suggesting a new model that “needs to appear as a successor” to the previous ForFour.
The vehicle stopped being manufactured in 2021 and was basically an extended ForTwo with an additional pair of doors, using the same platform as the Renault Twingo. It replaced the initial version of the ForFour that was available between 2004 and 2006, which had a front-mounted engine and was built on the Mitsubishi Colt.
European Engineering Roots
In contrast to the members of the current Smart lineup that were designed byGeelyIn China, the #2 vehicle operates on a new platform created in partnership with Mercedes in Europe. Adelmann mentioned that this is “very important because this team ensures we have a European product that is prepared for European customers.”
The European executive reportedly stated that the company chose to add another model to the lineup because they “need the economies of scale.” Smart has been attempting to create a new one.ForTwosince 2019, but it seems they were unable to locate a collaborator for co-development.
“We had always been working to make it possible, but it ended up taking three years longer than we anticipated… Better late than never,” Adelmann said. He mentioned that the main difficulty was reducing the platform’s size for the #2, as it’s “much easier to slightly expand” for a potential #4.
Expanding the Range
The Smart #2 will occupy a unique position as the sole two-seat electric vehicle in Europe’s A-segment. If a #4 had been developed, it would have entered a far more competitive market, facing competitors such as the upcomingRenault Twingoand the final production version of Volkswagen’s ID. Every1 concept.
The #2 will extend Smart’s lineup, which currently consists of the #1, #3, and #5 models. The naming system does not strictly correspond to size, but even numbers are designated for standard cars while odd numbers are used for SUVs. There are also additional reportsabout a potential Smart #6 sedanthat would align with this naming convention.

In the meantime, Smart is working on updates for the#1and #3 crossovers. Both will see significant hardware updates in 2026 as part of a model-year refresh, with a more major redesign coming in 2027. The #1 debuted in 2022 as the first offering from Smart’s new era, while the coupe-style #3 was released in 2023. The more square-shaped #5, which came out in 2024, is still the biggest model in the brand’s range.
