SEATAC, Wash. – The route has been free since its opening in late June, but beginning Monday, motorists traveling on the State Route 509 expressway in SeaTac will now be required to pay tolls.
A one-mile stretch of the highway links I-5 with SR 509 close to the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, featuring four lanes for vehicles.
By the numbers
The cost of driving on the 509 will vary depending on the time of day, and whether you have WSDOT’s.Good To Go! pass.
According to a table on the WSDOT website, the rate varies from $3.20–$4.40 for pay-by-mail and from $1.20–$2.40 forGood To Go!peak hour drivers, with the highest rates between 6:00–9:00 a.m. TheGood To Go!The warning light illuminated for the first time on Monday.
Authorities state that the tolls are anticipated to generate approximately $213 million of the overall $2.83 billion.Puget Sound Gateway Program— a comprehensive, 15-year initiative designed to connect state highways, enhance the flow of goods, decrease traffic in the I-5 area, and increase facilities for cyclists and walkers.
Big picture view
It is now only a one-mile section that will be expanded once additional projects are finished.
SR-509 previously terminated at S 188th Street close to Angle Lake in SeaTac, but the WSDOT is currently expanding it to help divert the Port of Seattle’s freight and daily commuting traffic from I-5. Authorities mention that SR-509 is expected to eventually reach Federal Way.
Essentially, the tolls apply only to the newly constructed sections of this SR-509 project. If you frequently travel on SR-509 and the construction hasn’t affected you yet, you likely won’t have to pay anything at all.
