Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has confirmed that three people (including the attacker) died in a vehicle‑ramming and stabbing attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester.

The two civilian victims have been named as Adrian Daulby, 53 and Melvin Cravitz, 66, both from Crumpsall.

One of the fatalities appears to have been caused by police gunfire.

GMP says that one of the deceased “would appear to have suffered a wound consistent with a gunshot injury.”

In addition, of the three people hospitalised:

  • The third was struck by the vehicle used in the attack
  • One has a non‑life-threatening gunshot injury incurred during the police response
  • Another was stabbed

Manchester Synagogue terrorist attack

The attack occurred just after 09:30 BST when a car was driven toward people outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue.

The driver then reportedly exited the vehicle and began stabbing bystanders.

Police have named the suspected attacker as 35‑year‑old Jihad Al‑Shamie.

The BBC reports that Security Correspondent Frank Gardner explained that “Al‑Shamie” translates from Arabic as “the Syrian,” suggesting the name may be a nom de guerre, a tactic sometimes adopted by jihadist perpetrators.

Body of attacker being examined

A photo of the attackers body has now been published from the scene of the synagogue which shows the body of the attacker being examined by a bomb disposal technician.

The BBC has reported that the suspect was shot on site by police officers within seven minutes of the original call.

Suspect not known to counter-terrorism police

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed condolences to the families of Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz and the broader Jewish community.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has confirmed that the suspect, Jihad Al‑Shamie, was not previously known to counter‑terrorism authorities.

Mahmood cautioned it is too early to determine whether a wider terrorist network was involved.

The Prime Minister said there would be additional police “assets” at synagogues across the UK.

Two men in their 30s and one woman in her 60s are also currently in custody on suspicion of the attack.

Controlled explosion

According to the BBC, a loud noise was heard at the scene of the attack.

The explosion was reportedly a result of specialist resources used to “gain entry to the suspect’s vehicle as a precaution”.

The GMP has articulated that there is “no risk to the public and ongoing activity in relation to this major incident can be expected as we continue our enquiries.”

Yom Kippur

According to a scheduled post on Heaton Park Synagogue’s website, worshippers were due to gather at 9:00am for a prayer service to mark Yom Kippur, making the attack even more

The timing of an attack on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar feels to many like it is designed to maximise the hurt felt across Jewish communities.

The BBC has stated that a witness stated that he saw two men in handcuffs on a residential street being led away by police.

Worshippers helped prevent attacker

Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson commented: “There were a large number of worshippers attending the synagogue at the time of this attack but thanks to the immediate bravery of security staff and the worshippers inside as well as the fast response of the police, the attacker was prevented from gaining access.”

Speaking on the attacker, Watson stated that he was wearing a vest “which had the appearance of an explosive device.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrives at Downing Street for COBRA meeting

Starmer is said to have cut short his trip to Denmark – where he was attending a leaders’ summit – in response to the synagogue attack.

Speaking after an emergency Cobra committee meeting in Downing Street, he says that earlier today “a vile individual committed a terrorist attack”.

Police cordon remains in Prestwich

A police cordon is still active in Prestwich.

The GMP has stated that the crime scene in Prestwich is connected to earlier arrests made in relation to the synagogue attack.

Prime Minister visits Manchester synagogue

Kier Starmer has been sighted at the Manchester synagogue, he has been shown shaking hands with police officers alongside his wife.
