The win places McKinley (6-1, 4-0) as the only team without a loss in conference games. Hoover, which lost key playmaker Jack Andes late in the first half due to a concussion, now stands at 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the league. This is the same record as Lake after it suffered a defeat.shootout at home to Jackson on Friday.
There are many lessons from that game,” said Renzy Parnell, the head coach of McKinley. “I told the team that I am proud of them. They managed to find a way to win the football game. It’s always good to learn from those mistakes in a victory.
Leading 21-14, McKinley had two turnovers in the last three minutes. A fumble by Deejay Britt — forced by Chase Lukens and recovered by Carter Lukens — resulted in John Collins throwing a 11-yard touchdown pass to Brycen Beyer on fourth-and-9 with 1:57 remaining.
All Hoover had to do was kick the PAT. However, a low snap disrupted the timing, and David Wadley missed well wide left, maintaining McKinley’s lead. Throughout the season, the Vikings were 30 out of 31 on PATs before that kick.
The head coach of Hoover, Brian Baum, had thought about going for 2 but ultimately chose not to.
With approximately two minutes remaining, you go and defend,” said Baum, who had all three of his timeouts available. “There was too much time left. And then we ended up gaining another possession.
That was due to Chase Lukens, who intercepted Trent Hayden following McKinley’s recovery of an onside kick. Lukens’ interception placed Hoover in position at McKinley’s 44-yard line with 1:41 remaining.
However, four consecutive incomplete passes, including two drops, resulted in a turnover on downs for Hoover. McKinley then took the knee to conclude the game.
Turnovers, man, that’s part of the game,” Parnell said. “When you lose the ball, you’re giving them an opportunity. However, the defense performed well. We rose to the challenge and made some positive plays on defense. We fought through some tough decisions, stayed strong, and still had faith in ourselves. That’s just part of football. That’s part of the learning process.
McKinley’s sophomore running back, Kyelin West, accumulated 114 yards and scored a touchdown through 25 rushing attempts. Hayden threw 16 completed passes out of 20, totaling 149 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Britt received five passes for 54 yards and a touchdown, while Elijah Finn gained 53 yards on six receptions.
The missed PAT was not the only special teams error by Hoover. They kicked the ball to Darius Hill in the second quarter rather than kicking it out of bounds, and the junior returned it for a touchdown covering 67 yards.
Collins, who sat out last week’s victory over GlenOak due to an ankle injury, came back on Friday but didn’t have his typical movement against Hoover. He then worsened the ankle injury late in the first half and appeared significantly slowed for the remainder of the game.
However, the senior pushed through and completed 13 out of 31 passes for 201 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He connected with Andes for a 71-yard touchdown on Hoover’s first drive, giving them a 7-0 advantage.
The Andes had three catches for 94 yards. He got hurt while playing quarterback, two plays after Collins was injured, near the end of the first half.
Junior Michael Lammlein provided a significant boost to Hoover in the second half after Andes was sidelined, finishing with 98 yards in total. He carried the ball 11 times for 53 yards and caught four passes for 45 yards.
I encouraged them to be proud of their effort, but also to understand that we have the potential to win those games,” Baum said. “We are aware that we gave up some opportunities. That’s what was most disappointing. We left some plays on the field.
