Black Rainbow‘s Chief Product Officer, Matt Swenson explains how the company – which designs and develops software solutions that facilitate forensic, security, investigation and case management services – is tackling data fusion

Can you tell us a little bit about you and why you joined Black Rainbow?

I spent 20 years working as a Special Agent for Homeland Security Investigations and NASA before retiring as the Division Chief for the Cyber Division at the DHS Cyber Crimes Center. I specialised in cyber investigations, cyber threat intelligence, digital forensics, and incident response.

What intrigued me about Black Rainbow and ultimately led me to join the company was seeing how complete the NIMBUS platform is. I’ve used various investigative case management platforms throughout my career, but I had never seen anything as robust as NIMBUS. After seeing the software’s capabilities in a demo from CEO Jim Kent, I knew it filled a giant void in the market, and I wanted to be part of building something special.

There is lots of talk around fusion of data, what does this mean?

Data fusion involves bringing data together from ordinarily disparate data sources or data from teams functioning in a siloed environment. Fusion Centers spawned in the United States after the September 11 attacks. The thought was to bring law enforcement from local, state, tribal, and federal levels under the same roof to better foster information sharing to address terrorism-related intelligence more promptly.

The cybersecurity community has adopted the concept of fusion centers to bring disparate corporate security entities under the same roof. Teams from global investigations, intelligence, the Security Operations Center (SOC), Incident Response, Digital forensics, and others are brought together to create a single integrated cyber defense entity. Our goal at Black Rainbow is to build collaboration software for all members of the fusion center team to respond to cyber incidents more efficiently and effectively.

How do you see the security sector growing/developing in the coming years?

As humans rely increasingly on connectivity to the internet to accomplish their daily tasks and more of their sensitive data is stored online, security becomes increasingly important. The sector continues to grow for the foreseeable future and innovates rapidly. I’m particularly interested in seeing how artificial intelligence space evolves over the next 5-10 years.

Are there any new products Black Rainbow is launching?

At Black Rainbow we are always looking to bring value to our end users. We are working on NIMBUS products involving Investigator, Intelligence, Incident Response, and Fusion. We will have some exciting and intriguing releases in the next six months, so please stay tuned!
