CCTV systems at lower risk with subscription, VMS says

Video Management Servers Co. (VMS) has stated that its new Managed On Site Server (MOSS) subscription is a better fit than cloud for many CCTV systems.

Like Cloud, MOSS offers managed servers and subscription payments, supporting rental and subscription VMS software models.

The difference is that MOSS servers are deployed locally, reportedly keeping the video recording quality high and streaming costs low therefore irradicating unreliable networks and broadband along with the security risks that are associated with outsourcing.

CCTV systems supported with MOSS subscription

Nick Bowden, Director, VMS Co. articulated: “CCTV systems stream large amounts of video data, creating specific deployment requirements which our MOSS, Managed On Site Server service addresses.

“First, MOSS is a fully managed service, taking the server up-time responsibility away from the integrator as VMS Co. owns, manages, maintains and warranties the server on site, with ‘next-business-day’, field engineer support.”

Storage systems reduced

Bowden continued: “Second, video streaming, storage and processing costs, which are expensive in the cloud, are largely removed.

“CCTV camera resolutions or recording profiles are often downgraded in cloud CCTV systems, such as 25FPS to 6FPS or even lower, simply to reduce streaming and storage costs, compromising quality and storage duration.

“With MOSS, there is no such restriction, with recording quality aligned with application requirements.

“Third, a local server removes dependence on broadband or WAN networks, which can often be unreliable.

“Think of video calls buffering or grinding to a halt due to network issues. This is not acceptable with CCTV systems and one which MOSS removes.”

“MOSS can help remove exposure”

“Lastly, for many high-security applications, remote access brings an unacceptable security risk,” added Bowden.

“Cloud systems not only require remote access to function, but they also stream sensitive video data to the cloud; a remote server in a datacentre managed by someone else!

“This is particularly relevant right now, with many high-profile cyber-attacks in the news, especially in retail.

“MOSS can help remove exposure to such risk in CCTV applications, if deployed in a resilient infrastructure,” finalised Bowden.
